“The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.”
Just because everybody else is doing it, doesn’t mean you have to. It can be tempting to want to do what your friends are doing, to follow along with all the latest trends. But believe it or not, not all trends are worth following.
I get it, the FOMO (fear of missing out) is real. You feel like by not doing what everyone else is doing, or not having what everybody else has, or by not going where everyone else is going, you’ll miss out on something so spectacular and you’ll never be able to live it down.
But what if I told you that there will always be a “next best thing”. That no matter what you do, or what you have , or where you go, there will always be one more thing that you believe you need to do, or have, or go. It never ends. There’s nothing wrong with indulging now and then, but you should question if your entire life has become the pursuit of trends.
In order to develop, it is crucial to learn how to differentiate between things that matter and things that don’t. Learning how to sift through the clutter and identify what you really need in order to succeed in life, will be of infinite value for the rest of your life.
So the next time you are presented with a new trend, think to yourself, why is it that I want to follow, and will I get anything of value out of it? This will lead you on the right path to investing your time, money, and energy towards things that truly matter.
And with that I wish you the best of luck. ☺
